Creating a Starscroller with Camera Orbiting Around an Object

Creating a Starscroller with Camera Orbiting Around an Object

Today, I have been learning how to create a star scroller effect in Blender, combining a revolving camera and a central object. I've gone through designing the object and setting up the emitter to create a star scroller, so the instructions start by setting up the camera rotation.

Here are the steps I've taken:

  1. Parent the camera and emitter to an empty object
    1. Add an empty at the spaceship's location (0,0,0)
      1. Shift + A > Empty > Plain Axes
    2. Parent the camera to the empty
      1. Select the camera
      2. Shift-select the empty
      3. Press CTRL + P and choose Object
    3. Parent the emitter to the empty
      1. Select the emitter
      2. Shift-select the same empty
      3. Press CTRL + P and choose Object
  2. Animate the camera orbit
    1. Position the camera to face the spaceship
      1. Open the N sidebar
      2. Go to the View tab
      3. Enable Lock Camera to View
      4. Position the camera as needed, then disable Lock Camera to View
    2. Animate the empty to rotate 360° in 3600 frames
      1. Go to frame 1
      2. Set Z rotation of the empty to 0°
      3. Press I and select Rotation to insert a keyframe
      4. Go to frame 3600
      5. Set Z rotation of the empty to 360°
      6. Press I and select Rotation to insert a keyframe
  3. Add subtle spaceship motion
    1. Select the spaceship
    2. At frame 1, slightly adjust the position or rotation
    3. Press I and select Location and/or Rotation to insert a keyframe
    4. At frame 3600, add a small offset to position and/or rotation
    5. Press I and select Location and/or Rotation to insert a keyframe

Here's how it looks:
