Using Shape Keys To Animate Edges

Using Shape Keys To Animate Edges

I've been learning how to animate edges with Blender.

Since edges or other geometry in Blender's Edit mode cannot be animated directly with keyframes, you need to use Shape Keys and assign keyframes to them.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Select the object
  2. Go to the Object Data Properties tab
  3. Add at least two Shape Keys using the + button
  4. Enter the Edit Mode by pressing the tab key
  5. Select a Shape Key (from the first key onward)
  6. Manipulate the edges
  7. Return to Object Mode by pressing the tab key
  8. Select a Shape Key (from the first key onward)
  9. Increase the value of the selected Shape Key
  10. Add a keyframe for the Shape Key in the timeline

Here's the result (the changes take time):
